The night of Museums is, undoubtedly, one of the most important summer events in Berlin, if you like history, art and culture. This event is organized by more than 100 museums and cultural institutions of the city that will remain open to the public all night long on August 27th from 6pm until 2am.
Berliners and tourists will have the chance to visit museums and galleries that will show their best exhibitions, collections and antiques in one night enriched by a wide range of events. There’ll also be theatre, readings, concerts, culinary events and many more.
The night of museums had its first edition in 1997 in the then recently unified Berlin. This event, which took as a reference the cultural events that take place during the white nights in Saint Petersburg in Russia, began due to the initiative of a few museums and cultural institutions that were thrilled with the idea of turning the typical visit to cultural events into a unique experience. Such has been the success of the night of the museums that, currently, the number of institutions that participate keeps growing every year and, also, inspiring other German cities and countries in the world to organize similar events.
Currently, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Stuttgart and Kassel celebrate this event in Germany. Spain, Holland, France, Italy, Hungary, Austria. Switzerland and even Argentina are some of the countries in the world in which events like this take place.
In Berlin, the Night of the Museums is a biannual celebration (during summer and winter). When you buy the ticket for this event, you won’t just have access to all the museums and cultural institutions that participate but also free access to different metro, train, bus and tram lines, so that you can get around easily in the nearly 400 sq kilometres between the Reinickendorf Local History Museum, the Waterplant Friedrichshagen Museum and the Glienicke Palace.
